David Shaltz began his legal career more than 30 years ago as a VISTA volunteer at the Greater Lansing Legal Aid Bureau. It is there that he met his future wife and best friend and learned how to successfully navigate the complex rules of state and federal government benefit programs for his clients. David is recognized statewide as an expert on Michigan’s Medicaid program. He is a frequent trainer on elder law topics for community groups, nonprofit organizations that serve older and disabled persons and professional organizations. In addition to elder law, David’s practice includes complex litigation and appeals of state administrative law issues. He often represents residential customers of utility companies in rate cases before the Michigan Public Service Commission. David is a member of the State Bar of Michigan’s Administrative Law, Elder Law and Disability Rights and Probate and Estate Planning Sections as well as the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys. He is a former editor and chapter author of the David is the 2010 recipient of the Joe D. Sutton Call to Justice Award from Elder Law of Michigan, Inc. The Call to Justice Award pays tribute to individuals who demonstrate “passion and exuberance to fairness and justice, causes and other actions that help older adults realize the freedom to exercise personal choices about health care, living arrangements, supportive care and the activities that bring joy and meaning to life”. It acknowledges those who are widely trusted as “someone to turn to for advice and assistance”. Away from his law practice David enjoys golf, being on the water and playing banjo and guitar in The Basement Boys (a not so famous band).
